Pyrmont Paintings

Over the past 30 years, artist Jane Bennett has been granted unprecedented access to areas restricted to the public to build a comprehensive archive of work documenting the changing urban landscape of Sydney. Since the early 1980s she has specialised in painting the industrial and maritime heritage of Sydney. As a plein air painter, Jane has been the Artist in Residence at many sites including the Pyrmont Power Station, the C.S.R. Refinery & Distillery, Cockatoo Island, the Woolloomooloo Fingerwharf, Walsh Bay Wharves, White Bay, the A.G.L. Gasworks at Mortlake, Carleton United Brewery, Eveleigh Railway Workshops and Barangaroo. Almost everything that she has painted has been demolished or changed beyond all recognition. Her paintings show the cycle of abandonment, decay, destruction and renewal of the inner-city landscape and remain as a historical testament to the passing of an era.
